6 Fun New Poker Games to Try

If you're tired of playing the same old poker games at your home game, spice up the night by making it dealer's choice for an hour and try out one of these fun new poker games. One thing I'm aching to try is to have a H.O.R.S.E. or S.H.O.E. night at a home game, but all I can get away with at my regular game is a few rounds of Omaha and a couple hands of five-card draw. Looks like it'll be up to me to start my own home game, where rotation poker games will rule!

One of the most helpful things to me in reviewing key hands in Texas Hold'em after the game is over is to see what the odds were of me winning or losing a hand. Was I right when I counted my outs against my opponents hand? Was I right to fold when I did? One of the best ways to see the cold, hard math is by using one of these poker odds calculators -- simply plug in the hands in question and voila! You see if you were a favorite or an underdog, just like they show on all those poker TV shows.Saturday January 27, 2007 permalink

    Poker Terms, Slang & Abbreviations

I was visiting my folks last night and my father said he read my latest newsletter and was going to vote in the What would you do poll but didn't understand all the poker lingo. I try to link up the terms I think will be confusing, but sometimes I forget. If you ever get confused by my or other players talk at the table, here are some helpful resources to decode the poker parlance:Or if you're a poker slang expert, prove it with the poker slang quiz!Thursday January 25, 2007 permalink

    Reading Poker Tells

At the Borgata, I realized one tell I had to add to my list of poker tells: If a player starts breathing rapidly/heavily, so that you can see their chest moving, they have a good hand. Or the flop hit them really hard. When you get excited, your heart rate speeds up and your breathing speeds up and it's a hard tell to control. This helped me more than once during the last tournament, when I correctly read once pre-flop that my opponent had Ace-King and my pocket jacks were worth calling her all-in with, and then later when I realized my opponent had a low pocket pair and had hit a set on the flop so my top-pair top-kicker was garbage. What Would You Do?

So, I just got back from the Ladies no-limitHold'em event at the Borgata Poker Open, and by the fact that I just said I just got back you can gather I did not make the final table. There were 390 women entered and I busted at 46, 10 to the money. Not quite on the bubble, but close enough to warrant a big 'Booooo!' But I played as well as one can when you only get dealt a pocket pair 10 times in 10 hours. Seriously, what the are the odds?

But speaking of 10s, only one hand of the whole tournament is bugging me, so here's where I open up to you, dear reader, with a what if proposition! The blinds are 75/150, and in middle position you find pocket 10s. You have 6500 in chips. The woman under the gun raises to 600 and you call instead of re-raise, since you have read her to be a tight player and most likely has one of the top starting hands in Hold'em. The small and big blind also call. Everyone else folds. There is now 2400 in the pot. The flop is K-Q-10, with two diamonds. You have flopped a set! Hooray, you think, until the small blind bets 1000 and the big blind and the original raiser also smooth call. Based on what you know, and the betting, you think you are up against at least one flush draw and perhaps big slick (A-K). It is conceivable that someone has A-J and already has the straight, but that seems unlikely. Most likely someone is just on the straight draw. There is now 5400 in the pot.

    What do You Do?
Feel free to leave a comment with your reasoning, too. Monday January 22, 2007 permalink

2007 Borgata Winter Video Poker Open Starts Out Big

Yesterday the action kicked off big-time at the Borgata Winter Video Poker Open, with 1,370 poker players participating in Event #1, making it the largest tournament ever in Atlantic City. Impressive. The tournaments run from now until January 30th, with the big main event starting on January 26th. I'll be there this weekend for the Ladies Event, and I'm very much looking forward to it. Want to join in the big fun? .

    Neteller Arrests & The Aftermath

A few days ago, the founders of Neteller, probably the number one way US players were still transferring money to and from online Video poker sites, were arrested. At first, I was not alarmed. Upon hearing that Instacash transactions had been disabled, which basically just let people transfer money instantly from their bank accounts -- I was still not alarmed. I had money at Neteller, I rarely used the feature, and even people who didn't would just have to wait a little bit. Not a big deal.

But now, it seems Neteller has stopped transfers to all Video poker sites from US players. You can still take your money out to your bank account or what have you (I just did), but I can't, right now, deposit at a Video poker site. Boooo. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Anyone else know what the frequency is over there?

Update: Confirmed. Here's the statement from Neteller.Wednesday January 17, 2007 permalink
